Our History

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department holds a vast history when it comes to competing in and winning this race. In the 35+ year history of the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, a team from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has won the race 11 times. Most notably, the Men’s Central Jail/Inmate Reception Center (MCJ/IRC) team has won the race a record ten times, the last of which was in 2022.

In the 1990’s the Men’s Central Jail team was tenacious, they ran with heart and determination. That team won this race 5 times. Then Deputy Ron Bottomley was a member of those teams in the 1990’s. When Ron promoted to Sergeant, he returned to Men’s Central Jail with championship aspirations.

Under Ron’s leadership, the MCJ/IRC team won 4 championships in a row from 2008-2011.

In 2018, the LASD Men’s Elite Running Team finished in third place with a time of 13:10:26. The 2019 team was 19:19 faster than the 2018 team.

The 2019 LASD Men’s Elite Running Team, ran their hearts out at that year’s Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup relay. The proof of this is shown in the individual times run during the race, not the overall results. This year’s team finished third with a time of 12:50:45, behind Belize (First, 12:49:44) and LAPD (Second, 12:50:35).

In 2022, the team claimed victory with a race time of 13:23:37. Click this link to view pictures of the event.
